Anytime someone mentions a hair woe to me, I’m instantly transported back to my own days of hair hell.
Fortunately, those days are far behind me now but even though my hair is healthy and bald-patch free, I’m not immune to some of the other hair-itations that plague the world of women. Like split ends!!!
I know all too well that a 6-weekly trim is the key to preventing splitting but honestly, who has the time?? And it’s not just grown-ups that deal with this hair-itation; my 5 year old has split ends galore between appointments. So what is a lass to do??
Fortunately, there are so many great (all natural) remedies for keeping the ends of your hair in tip-top condition and preventing breakage, splitting and damage. Below are some of my all-time favourite hacks for nourishing your hair between salon visits and even allowing you to go some extra weeks without trimming.
Yoghurt + Castor Oil
Mix 1/4 cup whole fat yoghurt (or coconut yoghurt) with a tablespoon of castor oil. Apply to the hair and leave for 15-30 minutes before washing.
Castor Oil contains fatty acids that coat hair, locking in moisture and protecting against damage.
Egg Yolk + Honey
Combine 1 egg yolk with a teaspoon of honey and leave on for 2 hours before rinsing.
Honey is a natural humectant that locks in moisture and prevents dry, brittle hair. Eggs are packed with protein and amino acids that prevent split ends from worsening and also restore shine, strength and volume.
Hot Coconut Oil Treatment
Warm 1/4 cup of coconut oil for approx. 10 second in the microwave and add 6 drops of rosemary Essential Oil. Apply to dry hair, either the whole scalp or just the ends. You can also use shea butter or argan oil if your hair is particularly coarse. Wrap you head in a towel and leave for a minimum of 20 mins; though I personally like to leave this on over night and sleep in a shower cap or with a towel over my pillow. Wash hair thoroughly (even double shampoo if necessary) when you’re length of time is over.
This rinse will make your hair incredibly soft! Just boil 1 cup water and pour over 1 tablespoon of dried nettle, 1 tablespoon dried sage and 1 tablespoon dried rosemary. Steep for 10 minutes and then strain. When the tea has cooled add 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and apply to your hair in the shower after shampooing. Let sit for at least a minute and then rinse.
The acetic acid in apple cider vinegar clears out product residue and adds shine while the herbs strengthen your hair.
