There’s something truly amazing about cucumbers… maybe it’s the way they freshen up a G&T, or how a single slice can reduce a proper puffy eye; maybe it’s the zero calorie factor or the fact my stepdaughter munches away on a stalk like she’s eating an apple or maybe it’s because they’re one of the first vegetables I ever really liked? Who knows really, but I do love ’em!
Funnily enough, they’re not just a diet-friendly food but a serious skin saving contender. Full of vitamins E & A, potassium, magnesium and even silica (a truly amazing anti-wrinkle, age-defying wonder ingredient), it’s no wonder it’s popping up in beauty products all over the place – I mean have you seen the new ‘say yes to cucumbers’ range??
Even here at The Model Handmade, we use cucumber in our product line and even after 6 years of DIY-ing I’m still amazed at what it can do! Perfect in shampoo and conditioners, great for wrinkles, puffiness, even acne and on top of it all it’s actually a great moisturiser….
One of my favourite cucumber beauty recipes is a soothing and cooling cucumber mist. I actually used to make these before a flight to keep my skin from drying out, plus it’s great for sunburns and to repair skin cells in trauma.
“COOL AS A CUCUMBER” MIST
This recipe has a relatively short shelf-life because it’s made sans chemicals, preservatives and using only 100% natural ingredients. If you can, keep it refrigerated and bin it after 5-6 days – you’ll know when it’s past it because it’ll start to smell like booze.
1 green tea bag
1/2 Lebanese cucumber
1 TBS aloe vera gel
1 tsp vitamin E oil
3 drops lemon Essential Oil
Brew a cup of green tea and refrigerate until cool (approx. 10 mins).
Peel and puree/juice the cucumber and run through a fine-sieve or cheesecloth to remove any pulp.
Into a spray bottle add 1/4 of the cup of green tea and 2 TBS of the cucumber juice, plus all the remaining ingredients.
Cap, shake to combine and you’re ready to use.
How easy was that?…..
Lots of Love
