The Ultimate Summer DIY Survival Kit…. #TMHhacks

I actually can’t believe it’s almost summer here in the UK – I mean we are half way through the year already…. WTF?!

I’ve heard it’s an age thing but the years seem to fly by much faster than they did when I was a kid and almost as soon as I’ve packed away my summer essentials to make way for woolly coats and wellies, the sun is out, the sky is blue and I’m surrounded by fresh flowers and chirping birds.

Summer is England is still a foreign concept to me even after almost 3 years, because while it can be gloriously sunny and warm it doesn’t even come close to the scorchers we get back home in Sydney. Heat waves that close down schools, weather warnings on the telly and back when I was a kidlet, lunchtime icy-poles when it got to 35C.

I remember my first warm season here in London when I was working down by St Paul’s and on one particular day the temp got to around 31C. My Gosh you should’ve heard the complaining! So many fair-skinned POMS sweating like mad, barely able to get up from their desks and chugging down water like it was going out of fashion – to be fair, that’s how we Aussies get come winter and the chill sets it. BUT when the heat hits I’m in absolute heaven and it feels being back in the Mother land.

Sunny Days definitely call for a sun-survival kit and some of my favourite DIY’s, scented with citrus fruits to really bring them to live, so here are my top recipes for all things SUMMER!

I know sunscreen bars are a relatively new commodity but they’re so good for kids who struggle with squeezy bottles and love being able to show their independence, plus they’re nowhere near as grimy as their lotion counterparts – Win/Win.

1/3 cup melted coconut oil
1/3 cup shea butter
1/2 cup grated beeswax
1/4 cup non-nano zinc oxide (…)
1 tsp vitamin E oil
Pulp of 1 passionfruit
10 drops coconut Essential Oil

In a double boiler, melt the coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax.

Once melted transfer to a heat proof bowl and whisk in the remaining ingredients until smooth and combined.

Pour the mixture into a silicon soap mould (or cupcake/muffin tray) and place in the freezer for 15 minutes to set.

Once set, pop the bars out of the mould and they’re ready for use.

After a day of sweat-infested fun a scrub is an absolute must for keeping your skin soft, smooth and sun-fun ready. Salt and sugar scrubs are my all time favourites for detoxifying the skin and brightening the complexion.

1/2 cup course sea salt
1/4 cup raw sugar
2 TBS coconut oil, melted
1 tsp orange zest
10 drops sweet orange Essential Oil

Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and stir well so the salt and sugar are coated with the coconut oil. Transfer to a jar of your choice.

3 black teabags
¼ cup organic lotion
4 TBS coconut oil
4 TBS avocado oil

Step 1: Boil 1 cup of water. Once bubbling, remove from heat & add in your 3 black teabags. Let steep for 20 minutes.

Step 2: Add your lotion, coconut oil, & avocado oil to your blender & blend until smooth and creamy.

Step 3: Add your cooled down black tea to your blender & pulse till fully combined.

Step 4: Pour into either spray bottles or squeeze bottles, apply generously, & hit the rays.

The thing about being out in the sun is that even lathered in sunscreen you’re skin still feels the burn which is why a good post day out treatment is absolutely essential. If you’re in a pinch or you want an #everyonelovesaquickie then pure aloe vera gel is the best post-sun saviour you can possibly use, otherwise add a few more ingredients to make it extra soothing.

3 TBS organic lotion
3 TBS shea butter
2 TBS aloe vera gel
4 tsp olive oil
1 lavender blossom grated with your fingers

Mix everything together and you’re ready to go. To make it even more soothing, keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to use it.
If there’s one certainty about summer it’s bug bites! In Australia we get mozzies, in London it’s ants – either way, this salve is perfect for de-redding and de-itching your skin.
1 TBS beeswax
1 cup Echinacea-infused Essential Oil
Melt the beeswax in a double boiler.
Add the Echinacea oil and whisk as it cools and becomes creamy.
TO USE: apply a generous amount to the bite and allow to dry.
And there you have it, the ultimate summer survival kit to make your sunny days amazing days.
