I’ll be the first to admit that I’m prone to really bad moods; not really anger or grumpiness but anxiety, stress, sadness and a la Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s the “Mean Reds”!
We all have days when nothing seems to be going to plan, we’re rushed off our feet, exhausted, cranky, PMS-y or down right moody and I can tell you first hand – it ain’t fun!
This is when a DIY comes in super handy. First, I love making things and it instantly puts me in a better frame of mind and second, because aromatherapy and Essential Oils can cure a multitude of emotional woes.
I’m an air-freshener gal from way back; probably because I used to have a nasty habit of smoking inside and used the glorious bottles of chemical perfumes to disguise the ashy stench, but also because nothing makes a post-poopy bathroom anywhere near as bearable as a quick spritz. Unfortunately, all those questionable ingredients can actually put you in a bad mood (even if they smell lovely) and there have been enough studies now to show the link between personal care ingredients and depression to make me never buy another spray as long as I live.
Essential Oils on the other hand have been used for eons not just for their scent but also their ability to uplift, inspire and set world of (emotional) wrongs to right.
There’s really no one size fits all approach to a great mood-boosting spritz and I definitely recommend using your own tastes, but here are some of my all time favourite feeling fresheners.
LOVING LAVENDER MIST
Lavender is amazing for soothing and calming the nerves, assisting relaxation and aiding a restful sleep.
In a bottle of your choice, fill 1/4 of the way with distilled vodka then top with filtered water. Add 15-20 drops lavender Essential Oil (and to make it look extra special a sprig of fresh lavender), then cap and shake well to combine.
FUN FACT: A gentle mist on your pillow before sleep makes for wonderful dreams.
POMEGRANATE POWER & PEACE PERFUMER
I adore pomegranates because they’re pink and yes I’m not too ancient to admit that pink is still my favourite colour. Great in salads, loaded with antioxidants, they smell delish and they always give me a burst of energy and vibrancy.
In a bottle of your choice, fill 1/4 of the way with distilled vodka then top with filtered water. Add 15-20 drops pomegranate Essential Oil and a teaspoon of pomegranate seeds, then cap and shake well to combine.
This recipe is really for my Nan (God rest her soul) as roses were always her signature scent and on her dressing (in pride of place of course) was a beautiful bottle of rose perfume complete with dried rose petals. She always smelt like a spring afternoon and without even realising, she was on to a winner.
Roses are great for boosting your mood – sensual, soothing, uplifting and rejuvenating they’re definitely a must-have for refreshing any room.
